Fastest Pizza Maker

Domino's Pizza named Pali Grewal the 2010 World's Fastest Pizza Maker. Grewal, a Domino's World's Fastest Pizza Maker from the U.K., made three large pizzas in an impressive 39.1 seconds. That's making three pizzas in just over 13 seconds each. Grewal won $3,000 in prize money, a trophy, and the title presented by Domino's president and CEO, J. Patrick Doyle.

"I've been hungry for this title for such a long time and it is just awesome to finally win it," Grewal says. "Like any great athlete, I've been practicing and practicing and now I am going to take a day off."

The finalists represented Domino's Pizza stores from around the world, as far away as Malaysia.

In 2006, some of the independent retailers selling Bell Products sued Bell.

"Independent retailers representing Bell Canada are suing Canada's largest telecommunications company, alleging "abusive, arbitrary" business practices.

The Independent Communications Dealer Association of Canada, claiming to represent four-fifths of Bell's independently operated stores, said today it has launched litigation in Ontario and Quebec alleging Bell has broken its contract in several ways."

The Independent Communication Dealer Association formed the obligatory website about the legal proceedings, which does not seem to have been updated or visited.

1. Can Bell Distribution Inc. ("BDI") unilaterally modify the way it compensates its  independent dealers for their sale of products and services as well as modify the market segment they are allowed to service?

After reviewing the facts, the Judge made the following observations about the duty of good faith and economic uncertainty.

"[108] In addition, the Civil Code codifies the duty of good faith at Articles 6, 7
and 1375 C.C.Q. and creates at Article 2805 a rebuttable presumption that a
person is in good faith.

[109] Consequently, the Dealers have the burden of proving that BDI, in bad
faith, implemented a new policy that was detrimental to them and commercially
unreasonable.

[110] The Dealers are BDI's business partners and they have the right to a fair
treatment. However BDI's duty of good faith and commercial reasonableness
does not go so far as to shield the Dealers from competition, changing market
conditions or strategic decisions by BDI designed to allow it to compete more
effectively in the market place, increase revenue globally and ensure future
growth. Market conditions evolve and so too will practices and expectations59.

[111] In the Court's view, the evidence reveals that BDI did abide by its duty of
good faith and commercial reasonableness in modifying its Corporate Account
Policy.
It consulted the Dealers prior to the adoption of the new policy, kept them
informed of the changes it intended to make and explained those changes.

BDI also took several concrete measures to support the Dealers, including the hiring of business sales managers and analysts, the implementation of an electronic tool, the organization of information sessions and other forms of training.60

[112] Consequently, the Court finds BDI's new Corporate Account Policy to be
valid.

An appeal was scheduled to be filed by the June 10, 2010.

franchise-info.pngHubspot provides a number of useful tools to evaluate a website, and I like their website grader tool.

You can use their website grader tool to get information about a website, figure out what improvements you might want to make and rank your site against others.

The tool is free, and it is good fun to see how Hubspot ranks you against other websites in your space. After all in the web the main metric is traffic, traffic and traffic.

I thought it would be fun to compare the IAFD ranking against other websites in the same space.

The Website Grade for bluemaumau.org!
First up are BlueMauMau, the franchisee news site, and the International Franchisor Association's site.

BMM scores a 99, which Hubspot claims to show that the website bluemaumau.org ranks 2,175 of the 2,600,529 websites that have been ranked so far.

Well that is pretty good. Not surprising.

The Website Grade for http://franchise.org/width=
What about the IFA's website?Hubspot ranks them as a 95, which means that  the website franchise.org ranks 129,668 of the 2,600,529 websites that have been ranked so far.  Part of the reason for the lower ranking is that the IFA doesn't have a blog, and the content is judged to be at the advanced or doctoral level.

They get points for their twitter buzz, but lose for no RSS feeds.

Next up are two of the largest independent franchisee associations, AAHOA and the 7-11 Coalition.

Although the AAHOA website has had a makeover, it doesn't score that well -  ranking 659,205 of the 2,600,529 websites that have been ranked so far.

No blogs, no feeds, no twitter, and no signup hurt the AAHOA ranking.

What about the 7-11 Coalition? It is doing better with an 83 score, but Hubspot thinks that there is a blog on the site, which I cannot find.

The readability score is high school, which is reasonable for the web. There are RSS feeds, but no twitter account nor sign up forms could be found which lowers their overall score.

And the IAFD, after 4 months on the web, how did we do?

We scored a 97, and lost marks because we don't have a twitter account associated with the site, and don't have any social bookmarks.  Things to change!

But we are pleased that we outscored the IFA's website!

The CAE program has served to elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance, and designate those who demonstrate knowledge essential to the practice of association management.

The CAE program recently earned accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

How many franchisee associations have CAE certifications?

AAHOA's Trade Show, 2010

AAHOA, being an umbrella trade association of hotel franchisees, counts on the financial support at its trade show from hotel franchisors. The hotel franchisors know that AAHOA members are not only franchisees, but they are buyers - changing the flag happens with some consistency in the hotel industry.

Congratulations on another great trade show!

Hotel La Quinta en Per? Illinois

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today announced that the La Quinta hotel chain has formally agreed to nationally cease "call-arounds" -- a potentially anticompetitive practice in which competing hotels exchange current room rate and occupancy information that can be used to fix prices.

National hotel chain La Quinta has five hotels in Connecticut and hundreds more across the country operated under the "La Quinta Inn" and "La Quinta Inn & Suites" name.

The five Connecticut hotels are:  La Quinta Inn in Windsor Locks, La Quinta Inn & Suites in New Britain, La Quinta Inn & Suites in New Haven, La Quinta Inn & Suites in Stamford and La Quinta Inn & Suites of Stonington.

Blumenthal's antitrust investigation into the hotel industry has found that the call-around practice is prevalent in the hospitality industry and raises serious antitrust concerns when competitors share current pricing and occupancy information because the information can be manipulated to raise or stabilize rates charged for hotel rooms.

The agreement can be read here.

La Quinta Hotels is one 10 hotels that participate in the AAOHA Fair Franchising program.

Maple Leaf Foods Logo

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is going to battle with Maple Leaf Foods Inc., (MFI-T8.970.030.34%) saying that it will do all it can to kill a poison pill that the company is putting in place.

The high-stakes argument comes just as a long-standing shareholder agreement between Maple Leaf's two largest shareholders, Teachers and McCain Capital Corp., expired Wednesday.

Teachers has already approached prospective buyers for its stake in the consumer products giant, according to sources. On Wednesday, the pension plan said the poison pill, or shareholder rights plan, blocks it from exercising its rights.

Jeff Lefler, the Executive Director of National Bread Network, says we raised our concerns on the change in controlling shareholders of Maple Leaf Foods when the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) announced that, after a 15-year relationship, they planned to sell their 35% interest.

"We have fears that hedge funds or other investors would only have a short-term interest in the company and a hostile takeover bid may be harmful to long-term stakeholders."
